Rare and Unissued
They have done something that few bands would dare attempt. They have re-released (for the first time on CD) cuts from albums recorded up to 25 years ago when they were hungry and virtually unknown outside of Sacramento, CA. The music on disk #1 of this double CD was recorded live before an appreciative crowd and the tunes run to covers, but don't let any of this dissuade the potential listener. Taken from their 1993 cassette-only release, Good T'me, the music is raw, forceful and emotional one minute and out-of-control riot the next. The music on disk #2, which appeared on the LPs Movin out, Prisoner of the Sky and Orion Express, is from the studio and suffers by comparison only in that it lacks the genuine emotional high of the band's live appearance. In the controlled environment, the youthful inexperience of the band is evident. The songs include a number of unreleased demos, including "Homework," "Your Mind Is On Vacation" and "Mercury Blues," all three recorded in 1974. The songs on this disk are from various generations of the band all the way back to when they called themselves Smith, Martin and Shaw., and later, when they were the Orion Express. Because of the diversity of musicians and musical styles, the music presents a much more complex concept and would have been difficult to pull-off in even the most optimum of circumstances. As a historical record of a great bar band in germination, it is a treat for the fans.
